Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to contest particular calls from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
