Two undefeated records remained in place at Anfield, but only one side could derive real satisfaction from the outcome. Daniel Farke's men carried out a textbook game plan of frustrating and containing the hosts, with the first goalless draw of Arne Slot's tenure highlighting the persistent issues behind the current title holders' recent recovery.
A drab goalless stalemate, the initial in 84 matches for Slot's team, was primarily due to the defensive dominance of the excellent centre-back pairing Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk, coupled with the home side's failure to break down a well-drilled visitors' unit. Liverpool were limited to hopeful half-chances, and a sprinkling of boos echoed around the famous ground at the final signal on a laboured performance.
"If I don't utilise the whole group and we have a fixture list like this, I would not make changes," Daniel Farke stated. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to look after him. We all are aware his recent couple of years was challenging. He is in incredible form but it's important I manage him and sometimes the head needs to prevail over the emotion."
Liverpool initially displayed more zip and precision than in previous matches, with the right wing-back influential on the flank. Nevertheless, clear-cut opportunities were few and far between. Their best moments in the opening period fell to forward Hugo Ekitiké.
Ekitiké's afternoon was compounded when he failed to hit the target with his clearest chance. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the attacker misdirected a header that hit the goalkeeper while with an unguarded net.
At the other end, their clearest opportunity came from an Alisson mistake. The experienced shot-stopper sent a wayward pass straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time effort back towards goal was saved by the recovering goalkeeper.
The match deteriorated into a scrappy encounter, low on incident. The midfielder, back from suspension, tested Perri from range. The subsequent rebound resulted in Ampadu handling the ball, giving the hosts a free-kick in a promising position, which Wirtz sent into the wall.
Slot introduced a triple change to inject urgency, and moments later Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to heading his team in ahead from a set-piece, his header bouncing just wide the post.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had continued his scoring run for Leeds in the final stages, but his finish was flagged out for a marginal offside. In the end, both sides had to settle for a share of the points.
