EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
