"When are you speaking to the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: I also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Several celebrated supporters have publicly petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals frequently feature them marching in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to form a group."

Grammy Nod

The trio have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The themes track breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed resilience called for a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international fan base.

But Haim will consistently be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
